Lance Corporal Mason, aged 26, died as a result of an explosion whilst on a routine patrol near Kajaki, in Helmand province, Lance Corporal Nicky Mason was born on 20 December 1981 and hailed from Aveley in Essex. He joined the Army in December 2001 and completed his training at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire. He was posted to 2 PARA in July 2002 and joined 12 Platoon, D Company.

He set up the Lance Corporal Nicky Mason Memorial Fund, which redistributes money raised to other charities such as the Parachute Regiment, in February More than £700 was raised for the fund at charity night at Aveley Village Social Club recently. Dennis said: “I’d like to thank Taste of Aveley and Ming Long Chinese for donating food vouchers, Steve Kite for donating his time and equipment as quiz master on the evening, Aveley Village Social Club for letting us hold the event there and donating wine for raffle, and everybody who came along, donated, and gave their continued support.”

The Barleylands Farm Charity Farm Walk, in Billericay, starts at noon. If you would like to sponsor Dennis, contact him on 07412 061052. “I want to thanks J & R and Paradise newsagents, Amba News, Tophouse and Aveley Sports and Social Club for their help raising the money.”

Dennis is already busy planning more fundraising activities, including a charity quiz night and an Army themed disco.

Dennis added: “I want to thank Amelia Manning for her donation of £137 as well, she saw one of the posters in a shop and called saying she wanted to help.”

Amelia, from South Ockendon, said: “I went round to all my neighbours asking them to donate. It was something I felt I needed to do.”
